What is your body's biochemistry telling us? How are your organs functioning? Do you have all the nutrients and vitamins your body needs to function optimally?

"FUNCTIONAL TESTING allows us to assess the body's biochemistry and organ function using Functional Lab Values via blood, urine and hair analysis. These lab values help us assess why the body is functioning sub-optimally.

Simply put, it allows us to discover the basic underlying and often hidden causes and catch issues before they become serious and medically diagnosable"

UNDERSTANDING CLINICAL VS FUNCTIONAL LAB VALUES
lab value analysis - What is your body's biochemistry telling us?
clinical lab values
A Clinical High or a Clinical Low lab result is indicating a more severe level of imbalance resulting in some type of disease or condition, and will often (not always) result in a clinical diagnosis.
functional lab values
A Functional High or Functional Low lab result can show when you are just starting to get sick. It is indicating an imbalance that is not yet severe enough to be given a clinical diagnosis, but indicating a slowing down in functioning of the body or a particular organ.
what you must know
Mostly medical doctors only look at clinical lab ranges. You may be told by your medical doctor that "your lab results came back normal."

In addition to Clinical Lab Values, Dr. Wilson also looks at the functional lab ranges as well. The goal is to clinically interpret and identify health problems before they become more serious. This is foundational to determining the best approach to the Allergy Elimination Protocol.

lab value report with explanation
sample lab report that Dr. Wilson will go over with you (20- 40 pages)
Once the lab results are back, I go over the findings of the report in detail with you. We not only look at the clinical lab values, but also the functional lab values to make sure we address any issues before they become big clinical problems.
This report is yours to keep and take home.

Do you recommend blood work for all your patients?

No, blood work and biochemistry analysis is not necessary for every patient. It depends entirely on the symptoms and historical assessment we do. Also, the timing of the blood work can vary as well. Sometimes I recommend blood work after the detox and not at the start of the protocol, for example.

How do you determine which tests are needed?

This is based on your allergy screening, history and symptoms. Once I know what is going on with you, I will recommend blood work or urine analysis or any other test necessary. Together we will go over each test and why I am recommending it. I will also cover what type of specimen is needed for testing (blood, saliva, urine, semen, stool, hair). If you are currently on any drugs or supplements, we will go over these as well, so they don't interfere in the testing.

Is there any preparation needed for the tests?

Before I send you to the lab for testing, I will take the time to explain - sometimes special preparation is required to improve the accuracy of a test. This may involve:
Fasting (not eating any or certain foods) for several hours or "overnight"
Drinking more or less water than usual
Avoiding certain medications or vitamins and herbal supplements prior to testing. It is important to talk to your doctor about the medications you are currently taking (including supplements and other over-the-counter medications) before making changes prior to having laboratory tests performed.
If you are delivering a specimen to the lab, there might be special instructions for transporting the specimen. I will provide you with written instructions for preparing for your test. Follow those instructions exactly as they are written. If you are not certain if special preparation is required, or if you have questions about the instructions you were given, please my office.

How long will it take to get the test results?

1-2 weeks

How will the test results affect the course of my care?

The test results will help us assess your biochemistry and help prioritize which organ systems to focus on in the protocol.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is the study of how well your body is functioning. It helps clinicians identify and ameliorate dysfunctions in the physiology and biochemistry of the human body as a primary method of improving patient health.

What type of imbalances are you looking for?

How well are your organs functioning?
Are there any neurotransmitter and hormonal imbalances?
Are there any immune or inflammatory imbalances?
Are you showing signs of early diseases?
Are you at greater risk for some diseases?
Are you experiencing any digestive, absorptive and microbial imbalances?
Are there any structural imbalances within your spine?

What is an example of a Lifestyle assessment?

Here are some common examples I ask everyone. Based on each patient, I may dive deeper into specific additional questions:
How well do you sleep?
Are you generally relaxed?
How do you handle stress?
How much do you move?
What's your exercise level?
Are you taking good nutrition?
Are you hydrating enough every day?
Are there any emotional triggers you are going through? What type of support system do you have in place?
Any history of trauma?
Any exposure to environmental pollutants etc., etc.?

Who are your most common patients that you recommend complete biochemistry panel for?

The patients that generally find me have been sick for a long time, are showing many different symptoms or show a vast number of allergies during the initial screening.

What is the cost of the testing?

Generally lab charges are $239 to $297, but can vary according to the tests needed and ordered.
